Women Protecting Women and
Children (WPWaC) was formed in response to an investigation
conducted by If
Americans Knew, which found that Israeli border officials
regularly
strip search women and children – some of them seven years
old and
younger. Many of these children are American citizens. Moreover, the
mode in which this is done is often particularly humiliating and, at
times, grotesque. This practice not only violates human decency, it violates numerous international laws, including the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Moreover, it fits the legal definition of child abuse. WPWaC is putting together a national campaign to ask Congress to demand that Israel end its humiliation and degradation of women and children. Since American taxpayers provide a substantial portion of Israel’s funding (over $8 million per day), we are all helping to pay for these searches. Therefore, we feel that it is our obligation to state that we will not allow our money to be used in this way. |
